BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad) Gallery

Sandpoint is one of the railway base of the west-northern area well known as "Funnel". Between Spokane and Sandpoint, 2 intercontinental railroad go along together toward the north. BNSF goes along with 95 National Highway from Coeur' d Alene, coming across Lake Pend Oreille on the formar longest wood bridge called, "Long Bridge" and arrives at Sandpoint station where the express Empire Builder will stop every mid night. The line from Spokane to Sandpoint is called "Pend Oreille Subdivision" from Lake Side (next to Spokane). From Sandpoint, BNSF goes north toward Bonners Ferry and goes into Montana, called Kootenai River Subdivision toward Whitefish, Montana. From Sandpoint, also Montana Rail Link goes east along the lake to mid Montana.

More than 120 years ago, there were 4 big intercontinental railway companies, Union Pacific, Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific and Santa Fe, and later the "King of the railroad", James J. Hill built 5th company named Great Northern. He bought Burlington railroad after the business war with Northern Pacific and Union Pacific. Finally he succeeded in get the management right of Santa Fe and Northern Pacific and here we understand why the railroad is called Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad. If he didn't build the 2 mile long bridge here, Sandpoint might be more minor and silent place.

The biggest difference in compalison to Japanes railroad, is the freight transportation. Still American railroad companies own a big role for this point. On the other hand, in Japan, almost over 90% is for passenger train, that's the big difference. BNSF will branch into 3 at Sandpoint. The original Great Northern line will go on the west edge of Sandpoint toward Bonners Ferry. The west branch will go along with Pend Oreille River toward Newport and then turns toward south and Spokane. The other branch line goes along the edge of Lake Pend Oreille toward Clark Fork and with Clark Fork River into Montana states. I stayed for a while in the City Beach and watched several freight trains passed the overcross of the bridge street. The slow move of the long train pulled by diesel locomotives was really really powerful and I got a strong impression.
